The Cast Offs Behind Cast Iron LA
We were both let go when we were in our 50’s from a large LA ad agency where we worked for decades, heading digital and social creative for many top brands including Honda, Pentax, ampm, Tempur-Pedic, Clippers, VH-1 and many more.
Early on, we were playing with names, and ultimately landed on Cast Iron LA because it seemed to mirror our own story. You see, Cast Iron represents the rebirth of old metal that’s been cast away. It was the brake pad that kept your family safe while driving. The metal bridge that provided a way to work. The girder of a demolished apartment building that fell out of architectural favor. All those metal scraps were collected and melted together in a process that made them stronger than before. We were inspired by this idea of taking something old and transforming it into something new and better. It reflects our own rebirth, and our commitment to creating work that is contemporary and enduring.

At Cast Iron LA, we draw inspiration from the cultural significance of cast iron in Chinese cooking. Cast iron woks have been used for centuries, and there’s a saying in Mandarin that roughly translates to “Without the old marks, there can be no new innovations.” This is especially true when it comes to the concept of wok hei, which refers to the breath of the wok, the smoky and charred flavor that can only be achieved by cooking in a properly seasoned cast iron wok over high heat.
